Artist Statement
My paintings usually start as sketches. Sketching allows me to be quick and messy during the iterative process. I move to oil and canvas once I feel confident enough in my concept. While painting I still keep myself open to new ideas as they come so the iterative process never truly ends until I feel that I am done with the painting.
My paintings are heavily inspired by my everyday life and culture. I use my paintings as a way to express my emotions, thoughts, and ideology. My main inspiration comes from the traditional Puerto Rican art form of Santos, which are hand carved wooden figures.
The purpose of my art is to use symbolism to evoke emotion while using abstract, figurative, and contemporary styles with cubist influences. My approach allows viewers to interpret the art in many different ways given each of my paintings ambiguous features.
